On Localizations of Torsion Abelian Groups

چکیده
As it is well known, torsion abelian groups are not preserved by localization functors. However, Libman proved that the cardinality of LT is bounded by |T |א0 whenever T is torsion abelian and L is a localization functor. In this paper we study localizations of torsion abelian groups and investigate new examples. In particular we prove that the structure of LT is determined by the structure of the localization of the primary components of T in many cases. Furthermore, the relationship between localizations of abelian p-groups and their basic subgroups is completely characterized.

On categories of merotopic, nearness, and filter algebras
We study algebraic properties of categories of Merotopic, Nearness, and Filter Algebras. We show that the category of filter torsion free abelian groups is an epireflective subcategory of the category of filter abelian groups. The forgetful functor from the category of filter rings to filter monoids is essentially algebraic and the forgetful functor from the category of filter groups to the cat...
متن کاملLocalizations of Groups
A group homomorphism η : A → H is called a localization of A if every homomorphism φ : A → H can be ‘extended uniquely’ to a homomorphism Φ : H → H in the sense that Φη = φ. This categorical concepts, obviously not depending on the notion of groups, extends classical localizations as known for rings and modules. Moreover this setting has interesting applications in homotopy theory, see the intr...

متن کاملAddendum to: "Infinite-dimensional versions of the primary, cyclic and Jordan decompositions", by M. Radjabalipour
In his paper mentioned in the title, which appears in the same issue of this journal, Mehdi Radjabalipour derives the cyclic decomposition of an algebraic linear transformation. A more general structure theory for linear transformations appears in Irving Kaplansky's lovely 1954 book on infinite abelian groups. We present a translation of Kaplansky's results for abelian groups into the terminolo...
متن کاملCotorsion theories cogenerated by א1-free abelian groups
Given an א1-free abelian group G we characterize the class CG of all torsion abelian groups T satisfying Ext(G, T ) = 0 assuming the special continuum hypothesis CH. Moreover, in Gödel’s constructable universe we prove that this characterizes CG for arbitrary torsion-free abelian G. It follows that there exist some ugly א1-free abelian groups.
